Public Benefits and Costs

Local stores in town centers require comparatively little infrastructure and make more efficient use of public services compared to big box stores and strip shopping malls.

Independents Week July 1-7, 2010
This July COLORS is once again joining other local small-business alliances and partner organizations nationwide to celebrate our great independent businesses. Thousands of independent business owners and citizens are participating in Independents Week. There is reason to celebrate— businesses owned by people who live and work in Columbia exemplify the uniqueness of our city. We choose to offer our goods and services right here, as an investment in this place all of us call home. Our citizens are integral to ensuring we keep these businesses that help define who we are and contribute to our sense of place. To celebrate “Independents Week” COLORS invites the citizens of Boone County to take the Indie Challenge. The Indie Challenge is simply to shop locally during the week. COLORS has created a directory of independently owned businesses within Boone County that residents can use as a guide to find retail stores and service providers. COLORS will be showcasing prominent members of the community who are stepping up to the plate to take the Indie Challenge throughout the week.
